A summers eve shot of this wonderful monument, once part of the Wentworth estate.
Keppel’s Column:
Designed by John Carr, the same person responsible for the Wentworth Woodhouse stables, stands at 115 feet, on one of the highest hills in the Rotherham District. The structure was meant to be much taller, and be capped off with a statue of Admiral Keppel, but the Marquis Of Rockingham ran out of funds.
Admiral Keppel was a friend of the Marquis who was court-martialled following a naval defeat by the French in 1777.
A pillar was already planned to mark the southern boundary of the Wentworth estate, but after the acquittal of Admiral Keppel, the design of the pillar was adapted and aimed to create a triumphant pillar by celebrating what the Marquis saw as a defeat for the government.
